  • Aboriginal Astronomy

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples were the first Astronomers in the world. Navigation, calendars and predicting the weather are important tools to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. These are some of the tools that were developed through observing the Sun, Moon and Stars. The stars are also used for indicators of seasonal change.

The Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory hosts an Aboriginal Astronomy night once a week. Noel and Shaun Nannup tell the dreamtime stories of creation. Attendees will learn all about the creation story and the deep Indigenous connections to the land, sky, ocean and wind. The Indigenous constellations will be showcased during a laser guided tour of the night sky, before moving onward to the observatory to gaze at the stars.
